Brief Synopsis: Facts, figures, and information regarding male penis size including size comparison chart.

Article Detail:

Man has always placed great importance on the size of his penis. Many cultures associate penis size with masculinity. Throughout the ages, it has come to symbolise qualities such as virility, fertility, strength, ability and courage.

"Weight gain is common as men grow older. As fat accumulates on the lower abdomen, the apparent size of the penis changes."

Most men's view about their penis is formed during childhood.

Growing up, they may see the penis of an older brother, friend or their father and mentally compare this to their own.

Fears and anxiety about penis size may also arise after taunts from other people during adolescence or following remarks from a sexual partner.

What is the Average Penis Size?

  • A penis would only be considered unusually small if it was less than 3 inches (7.6cm) long when erect.
  • For adults, the average penis size is about 14-16cm (5.5-6.3 inches) when erect. The average girth for an erect penis is 12-13cm (4.7-5.1 inches).
  • The average stretched penile length at birth is about 4 cm (1.6 in), and 90% of newborn boys will be between 2.4 and 5.5 cm (0.94 and 2.17 in). Limited growth of the penis occurs between birth and 5 years of age, but very little occurs between 5 years and the onset of puberty. The average size at the beginning of puberty is 6 cm (2.4 in) with adult size reached about 5 years later.

A statistically significant correlation between penis size and the size of other body parts, such as feet, fingers, thumb, nose etc., has not been found in research. One study, Siminoski and Bain (1993), found a weak correlation between the size of the stretched penis and foot size and height; however, it was too weak to be used as a practical estimator.

*The measurements are based on a review of 50 studies on penis size conducted since 1942, which between them have measured 11,531 penises.

Key Points Regarding Average Penis Size:

  • 45% of men in the study believed they had a small penis.
  • Erect lengths range around 12 to 16 centimeters (4.7 to 6.3 inches).
  • Flaccid circumferences range around 9 to 10 centimeters (3.5 to 3.9 inches).
  • Erect circumference (only one previous study) was around 12 centimeters (4.7 inches).
  • Across studies it has been concluded that flaccid lengths range around 7 to 10 centimeters (2.8-3.9 inches).
  • While 85% of women were satisfied with the size and proportion of their partner's penis in a study, men were less sure of themselves.

*Weight gain is common as men grow older. As fat accumulates on the lower abdomen, the apparent size of the penis changes.

How Do I Measure My Penis Length?

Use our penis size chart below to measure your length, or use a ruler (running along the top of your penis) to measure from the base of the penis i.e. where the shaft meets the body, to the tip or knob of your penis.

How Do I Measure My Penis Circumference?

  • The easiest way to measure the erect penis is to use a piece of string or similar and wrap it around the thickest part of the erect penis - this is usually very near the base but the glans just below the head can sometimes be thicker.
  • Make a mark on the string where it meets the start of the string and then lay the string flat next to a ruler and measure the distance between the beginning and the end mark. This measurement is your penis circumference.

Worlds Biggest/Longest Penis - Was it John Holmes?

John Holmes penis was 12 inches long when erect and 8 1/2' when limp. The world record penis length is 13 1/2 inches long and a massive 6 1/4 inch circumference.

Do women Prefer a Big Penis?

We are built to enjoy sex, and generally speaking there are very few individuals whose dimensions prevent them from enjoying sex with their chosen partner.

A 2013 study suggested that while women may be more attracted to men with larger penises (particularly if they're also tall and fit) that interest starts to taper off when a penis measures larger than 7.6 centimeters in its flaccid state. But other studies cited in the video found that gay men do show marked preferences for larger penises. Gay men's penises are, on average, a third of an inch longer. This may be a sign of intelligent design as men's mouths are also, on average, larger than women's.

A study of female preferences showed their idea of ideal penis size is between 7.25-8.25 inches in length and 6.25-6.5 inches in circumference. Anything less than 5inches in length is deemed "not satisfying". The same can be said for penises with circumferences under 4.5 inches or more than 7.5 inches.

*When men and women are asked what makes good sex, they rate tenderness, consideration and foreplay above your penis size.

Does One Size Condom Fit All Penises?

Fortunately condoms are not all the same size and shape.

  • Condom too big - it may slip off or become damaged during intercourse
  • Condom too small - it will be uncomfortable, and could split
  • Condom not long enough to cover the whole penis - the collar of the condom may roll up or the condom could be be pulled off during intercourse.

Counselling has proven to be beneficial for men with penis anxiety. Therapy helps patients identify and correct any distorted views about their penis, build self-confidence and overcome fears about sexual relationships.
