Synopsis: Gender equality is a fundamental human right and is essential to achieve peaceful societies, with full human potential and sustainable development.

Definition

Gender Equality

Gender equality, also known as sexual equality, is the state of equal access to resources and opportunities regardless of gender. It is achieved through gender neutrality and gender equity. Gender equality means that the different behavior, aspirations, and needs of women and men are considered, valued, and favored equally. It does not mean that women and men have to become the same, but that their rights, responsibilities, and opportunities will not depend on whether they are born male or female.

Main Section

Gender equality is a human right.

Gender bias is undermining our social fabric and devalues all of us. It is not just a human rights issue but a tremendous waste of the world’s human potential. By denying women equal rights, we deny half the population a chance to live life to its fullest.

Women are entitled to live with dignity and freedom from want and fear. Providing women and girls with equal access to education, health care, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making will fuel sustainable economies and benefit society and humanity at large.

Gender equality is one of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights objectives. World bodies have defined gender equality regarding human rights, especially women's rights and economic development.

Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.
