Summary: Information and image of the labrys, a symbol Anglo-American lesbian feminist subcultures adopted as a lesbian icon.

Main Document

The labrys symbol, a stylized form of the ancient Minoan sacred double-bladed axe, was originally an important symbol of Minoan religion on Crete (c. 2700 - 1450 BCE) and always belonged with female goddesses. The labrys, also associated with Amazons, has been a symbol of lesbianism since the 1970s. However, the official labrys lesbian flag, which features a labrys superimposed on an inverted black triangle and set against a violet background, was not designed until 1999. The labrys is claimed as a symbol of women’s empowerment, inspiring many lesbian tattoos and accessories.

Today, the usage of the labrys has waned in the queer community due to its association with second-wave lesbian feminism and TERFs (trans-exclusionary radical feminists). However, new versions are emerging that incorporate elements of the trans flag to denote trans inclusivity.
