Synopsis: Sexual Diversity news updates, fact sheets and information relating to bisexual males.
Male bisexuality is broadly defined as a romantic attraction, sexual attraction, or sexual behavior toward males and females or to more than one gender. Male bisexuality may also include romantic or sexual attraction to people regardless of their sex or gender identity, also known as pansexuality. Bisexuality and pansexuality are terms that people may use to describe sexual orientation. Generally, bisexuality refers to an attraction to more than one gender. People may define pansexuality as attraction regardless of gender.
The status of male bisexuality as a sexual orientation - the idea that some men are sexually aroused and attracted to both sexes - has a controversial history. Although some men identify as bisexual and have sexual experiences with men and women, the extent to which this reflects an underlying bisexual orientation has been questioned.
Studies (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5082634/) suggest attitudes toward bisexual men are more negative than toward bisexual women, and being portrayed positively in media is known to foster positive interpretations of people with marginalized identities.
As bisexual individuals in the United States (U.S.) face significant health disparities, researchers have posited that these differences may be fueled, at least in part, by negative attitudes, prejudice, stigma, and discrimination toward bisexual individuals from heterosexual and gay/lesbian individuals.
Even in the 21st Century, bisexuality in men continues to worry heterosexual women. Many regard it as a non-starter and won't date a man who reveals he's also attracted to men. The thing straight women fear most is that such a man is gay and that he's just claiming to be bisexual to hold on to heterosexual privilege. As Michael Schulman wrote in Bisexual: A Label With Layers in the New York Times, "Bisexuality, like chronic fatigue syndrome, is often assumed to be imaginary by those on the outside."
