Main Document

There are several different Genderqueer-Nonbinary symbols within the community; this page provides the black and white Genderqueer circle with star glyph as seen below. The circle with star symbol is also used to represent Gender Variant - a term that refers to individuals who don't conform to socially constructed, dominant gender norms.

The term genderqueer means someone who does not follow binary gender norms. They may be non-binary, agender, pangender, genderfluid, or another gender identity.

Some people who do not identify as solely male or female consider themselves nonbinary. Nonbinary and Genderqueer, also called GenderQueer or gender queer, are often used interchangeably by some, but not everyone considers them the same. There is controversy within the genderqueer community over whether genderqueer people fall under the transgender umbrella.

The term genderqueer is similar to nonbinary but has a slightly different meaning. The dictionary defines genderqueer as: "denoting or relating to a person who does not subscribe to conventional gender distinctions but identifies with neither, both, or a combination of male and female genders."

The term genderqueer has also been applied by those describing what they see as a gender ambiguity. Androgynous (also androgyne) is frequently used as a descriptive term for people in this category. This is because the term androgyny is closely associated with a blend of socially defined masculine and feminine traits. Not all genderqueer people identify as androgynous. Some identify as a masculine woman or a feminine man or combine genderqueer with another gender option.
