Summary: Bloom LGBTQ+ is a new Android community app for adults that puts friendship, chosen family and local connection first, with dating offered only as an option.
Chosen family refers to the close, supportive relationships people intentionally build with friends, partners, mentors and community members who provide the emotional care, loyalty and everyday practical help traditionally associated with biological or legal relatives. The term is closely tied to LGBTQ+ history, where many people who faced rejection from their families of origin formed lasting bonds with others who understood and accepted them, but it applies equally to anyone who finds belonging outside their birth family. A chosen family does not have to replace relatives; it can exist alongside them, filling gaps in support during life changes such as coming out, relocating, aging, illness, or disability. What defines it is not blood or paperwork but mutual trust, consistent presence and a shared commitment to showing up for one another over time.
In December 2025, we met on TikTok. Lenie was in South Africa, and Ninna was in Sweden, nearly 10,000 kilometres apart. What began as an unexpected online connection became a friendship and then a love story that changed our lives.
Our conversations also brought an older dream into focus. Long before Bloom existed, Lenie had wanted to do something about loneliness in the LGBTQ+ community. Being able to talk openly with someone who understood her made one question feel especially urgent: what happens to the people who are still searching for that connection?
There are dating platforms, social networks and countless ways to message strangers. Yet having access to people online is not the same as feeling that you belong.
Imagine someone who has recently come out in their forties or fifties. Or a young adult who has moved to a town where they know nobody. Or someone whose family does not understand their identity, who has lost touch with old friends, or who simply wants another queer person to talk to over coffee.
A dating profile may not answer any of those needs.
Friendship is not a consolation prize for people who are not dating. It is part of what makes a life feel safe, joyful and connected. For LGBTQ+ people, it can also mean finding others who understand experiences we may not have the energy to explain every time we meet someone new.
That is where the idea of chosen family becomes so important. It is not about replacing the people we love. It is about recognising that family can also be built through trust, acceptance and the people who show up for one another.
Connection should not depend on where you live
It is easier to imagine a thriving LGBTQ+ social life in a large city with established community spaces. For someone in a small town, a rural area or a place where being openly queer feels difficult, finding those connections may be much harder.
Our own relationship crossed countries and languages. We know that distance does not make a meaningful connection impossible. But we also know that a phone screen, on its own, does not magically create friendship.
People need opportunities to discover one another, start conversations and gradually build trust. They also need the choice to connect locally or across borders, depending on what feels comfortable and safe.

On 25 July 2026, we launched Bloom LGBTQ+ on Android. It is a community app for adults aged 18 and over, with friendship at its heart and dating available as an option rather than an expectation.
Bloom brings together ways to find people nearby or around the world, spaces for chosen family and community, and a translation feature intended to make language less of a barrier.
We also wanted mental wellbeing and safety to be part of the conversation from the beginning. Bloom includes supportive check-ins and self-reflection tools, LGBTQ±affirming resource signposting, reporting functions and privacy-minded features such as Stealth Mode. These tools are still being improved; supportive wellbeing features are not a replacement for professional care, and no app can promise perfect safety.
It matters to us to be clear about that. Trust grows through honesty, not grand promises.
The difficult part is not the download
Bloom is still very new. As of October 2026, Google Play shows more than 100 downloads, and our Facebook community has grown beyond 1,200 followers. We are grateful for that early support, but we would never pretend that every town already has a busy Bloom community.
For a friendship-focused platform, a download is only the beginning. If someone opens an app and there is nobody nearby to talk to, the technology has not yet solved their problem.
That is why we talk about local density: enough real, engaged people in a town or region for connections to become possible. Building that takes patience, partnerships with community organisations, honest feedback and people willing to invite a friend and stay involved.
We are two women building across two continents without a large corporate team. Some days are exciting; other days are full of technical problems and lessons we did not expect. We are learning that community cannot simply be launched like a product. It has to be nurtured.
Where we hope to go next
Our next goals are to bring Bloom to iPhone, continue strengthening safety and reliability, and help more LGBTQ+ adults discover the community. We have opened an Apple, Marketing & Safety Enhancement Fundraiser to support that work. The iPhone version is a goal, not something already available.
Of course, we hope Bloom grows. But we do not want growth to be measured only by numbers.
If a person who thought they were alone finds a genuine friend, if someone who has only just come out finds reassurance, or if two people separated by distance discover a sense of belonging, that is what success would look like to us. We found each other across almost 10,000 kilometres. Our hope is to help other people find their people too.
