Avon Books, the HarperCollins Publishers imprint that has been at the forefront of paperback publishing since its inception in 1941, is once again stoking the fires of romance and women's fiction with the introduction of Avon Red, its new line of trade-sized erotica novels, which will also be made available as HarperCollins e-books.
Avon Books publisher Liate Stehlik notes;
"The popularity of erotica is increasing steadily, and, as with all that we publish, Avon will provide the best, most sophisticated erotic fiction available in the marketplace, written by the most talented authors."
Lucia Macro, Morrow/Avon executive editor, notes that there is a growing demand among consumers for these novels, saying;
"Readers have been responding well to edgier, sexier romance novels, and now Avon will be giving them that... and then some."
She continues;
"These stories are more than just steamy romances. They take readers farther than they've gone before, exploring fantasies that have no limits."
To Stehlik, these red-hot boundaries and urbane content naturally led to the imprint's naming. She says, "'Avon Red' will be seen a signal to consumers and booksellers as to what these books represent."
Avon Red will feature a diverse array of editorial content, such as historical erotic fiction, contemporary erotic fiction, paranormal erotic fiction and ethnic erotic fiction.
"We're positioning this as smart, sexy literature for women of all ages," says Morrow/Avon editor May Chen, "It's not your mother's romance novel - or maybe it is."
She notes that Avon Red novels are not just about sex; they focus on desire, and each novel/novella features powerful plot lines, apart from the more explicit content. These books are not traditional romances - there may not be a happily ever after; the stories may not focus on solely two romantic protagonists.
When asked about the burgeoning popularity of erotica and erotic romance, author Leda Swann, who will have two Avon Red releases, comments;
"Society seems, on the whole, to be growing up about sex and sexuality. It's no longer a dirty secret to be whispered about in dark corners - it can now be openly celebrated. The growth of erotica, which is a celebration of sexuality, is part of this whole maturation. Erotica readers are people who have accepted their own sexual natures. They are ordinary, everyday people who like a little bit of adventure in their lives. They are everyone's mother, father, sister, brother, neighbor, friend, colleague."
Avon has signed some of the most popular writers of erotic fiction being published today, as well as a variety of strong emergent authors, to pen anthologies and stand-alone novels for the Avon Red imprint.

When asked what compelled her to write for the new Avon Red publishing program, author Toni Blake comments;

Swann is confident about the future of her new publishing imprint, saying;

Avon Red trade paperbacks will be available wherever books are sold, and HarperCollins e-book editions will be available through online vendors.
